A Test Case in Jewish Law on Intersexuality -- Conf Paper -- March 1, UChicagoShare
Yesterday at 11:01pm

I'll be giving a paper on Monday, March 1st, at a conference on gender and Jewish & Israeli law (below) at the UChicago law school. You're encouraged to attend and please help circulate this information.

The paper develops a test case in Orthodox Jewish law that could resolve a key aspect of its contested handling of intersexual conditions.

Thanks!
Hillel

'What Pertains To a Man'? Transcending Gender Boundaries in Jewish and Israeli Law

Description:

The conference will run most of the day March 1, but specific times for individual speakers and films will not be available until closer to the dateThis small one day conference will be structured around two documentary films, Praying in her Own Voice and Paper Dolls (Bubyot Niyar), each centered on ways in which Israeli law and culture deal with individuals and groups who transcend the gender boundaries of Jewish law. The conference title is taken from Deuteronomy 10:22, which declares it to be an abomination for a woman to put on what pertains to a man and for a man to wear women’s clothing.

The conference will be held Monday March 1, coincident to the feast of Purim, which commemorates Esther’s saving the Jewish people by crossing uninvited from the women’s quarters to the king’s inner court and is traditionally celebrated with masquerades including some cross-dressing. Purim and the megilla of Esther are also important to the subjects of Praying in her Own Voice, the Women of the Wall, whose decades- long quest to pray and read from Torah scrolls wearing tallit at the Western Wall in Jerusalem led them several times to the Israeli Supreme Court.

The conference will juxtapose the Women of the Wall’s attempt to transcend gender boundaries with that of a very different group, the Paper Dolls, a drag performance troupe whose members are transgendered Filipino care workers in Israel. The award-winning Paper Dolls documentary explores the mulitiplicity of ways in which the group negotiates and transcends gender boundaries, as it examines the group members’ interactions with both the elderly orthodox Jewish men they are employed to care for and the gay male Israeli club patrons for whom they audition as performers.

Confirmed speakers for the conference include Aeyal Gross of Tel Aviv University, Pnina Lahav of Boston University, and Martin F. Manalansan IV of the University of Illinois. We will be adding a few additional speakers and to that end seek proposals in the form either of an abstract or draft paper dealing with any aspect of Transcending Gender Boundaries in Jewish or Israeli Law, by no means limited to the subjects of the two films. We welcome papers from all disciplines.

Location: Conference Room F

Life-Path number
no excuses
boigrrl1der

Your Life-Path number is probably the most influential numerological aspect to be considered. This number is determined by your birth date and represents who you are at this time. It indicates specific traits that are present and will likely be active and influential throughout your lifetime. It is the overall number that determines much of what will be important to you and how you will handle things as they come.
If your Life-Path number is SIX, a sense of responsibility will likely be prominent for you. SIXES are considered to be the most domestic of numbers and live a path related to leadership through example. This assumption of responsibility generally means that as a SIX, you’re always there to help others in any way you can. In fact, you must need to feel useful in order to be truly happy.
Those with a SIX Life-Path are usually very versatile and can communicate across any generation gap. SIXES are idealistic and usually recognize that wisdom, understanding and balance are the cornerstones to assume responsibility in the best possible way.
It is common for SIXES to be devoted to their families and homes. This is usually the first priority for a SIX with helping the community coming a close second. Key qualities/words for a SIX Life-Path are responsibility, protection, nurturing, community, balance, sympathy and family.
It can also be common for a SIX personality to assume far more responsibility than what’s necessary. At times this can leave you drained and exhausted. Other areas that may require development for a SIX are a tendency towards exaggeration, over expansion or self-righteousness. While you will almost always mean well as a SIX, behaviors such as meddling or interfering (especially in family matters) will likely lead to troubles.
The life purpose for a SIX is to embrace the ability to assume responsibility in balance and to provide advice, service and support to those around you and in the greater community. To deny oneself this experience as a SIX will almost inevitably lead to feelings of unsatisfaction. As relationships tend to spring from the SIXES actions, loneliness and isolation can also occur if this path is denied.
It can be challenging for some SIXES to take on the responsibility for what’s around them in a healthy balance. Careful planning and consideration for the self as well as others will alleviate feelings of overwhelm or guilt. Be careful not to be too critical or hard on yourself if you can’t do it all. Your path is one of assuming only what you are able.

Coffee Filters

Coffee  filters .... Who knew!   And you can buy 1,000 at the Dollar Tree/Store for almost nothing even the large ones.
1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the  microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers..
2. Clean windows, mirrors, and chrome...  Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.
3.  Protect China by separating your good dishes with a coffee filter between each dish.
4.  Filter broken cork from wine.  If you break the cork when opening a wine  bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.
5.  Protect a cast-iron skillet.  Place a coffee filter in the  skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
6.  Apply shoe polish.  Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.
7.  Recycle frying oil.  After frying, strain oil through a sieve  lined with a coffee filter.
8.  Weigh chopped foods.  Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a  kitchen scale.
9.  Hold tacos.  Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.
10.  Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot.  Line a plant  pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.
11.  Prevent a Popsicle from dripping.  Poke one or two holes as  needed in a coffee filter.
12.  Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows?  Use  strips of coffee filters..
13.  Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken  fingers, etc on them.  It soaks out all the grease.
14.  Keep in the bathroom.  They make great "razor nick  fixers."
15.   As a sewing backing.  Use a filter as an easy-to-tear backing for embroidering or appliqueing soft fabrics.
16.  Put baking soda into a coffee filter and insert into shoes or a closet to absorb or prevent odors.
17.  Use them to strain soup stock and to tie fresh herbs in to put in soups and stews.
18.  Use a coffee filter to prevent spilling when you add fluids to your car.
19.  Use them as a spoon rest while cooking and clean up small counter spills.
20.  Can use to hold dry ingredients when baking or when cutting a piece of fruit or veggies..  Saves on having extra bowls to wash.
21.  Use them to wrap Christmas ornaments for storage.
22.  Use them to remove fingernail polish when out of cotton balls.
23.  Use them to sprout seeds...  Simply dampen the coffee filter, place seeds inside, fold it and place it into a plastic baggie until they sprout.
24. Use coffee filters as blotting paper for pressed flowers.  Place the flowers between two coffee filters and put the coffee filters in  phone book..
25.  Use as a disposable "snack bowl" for popcorn, chips, etc.

1. I'm looking for a free desktop for my class. I currently have a laptop and I'm required to download a bunch of networking software (virtual pc, windows vista business, server 2008, as well as a bunch of other programs) the thing is I don't want to clog up my laptop with all this stuff.

or

2. I currently have a dell dimension 3000 that doesn't work. I haven't actually taken it in to be fixed but I'm pretty sure the motherboard took a crap. I was looking on newegg.com for another motherboard but I'm not sure which one to get.

or

3. I was also looking on http://www.charityadvantage.com/Computer.asp for one of the cheap computers. Thing is..I don't know which one of them would be a good deal. While the $169 dollar one is low on memory I could possibly take the old parts out of my broken computer to put in it to make it faster...
